Pol, andy & molly

Born out of lockdown.

Our coffee roasting journey began when the first 2020 lockdowns hit. Both of us having been in the wedding industry (Musician & Celebrant) for the previous decade and not knowing what the future held we both agreed we needed a change and a new challenge.

After spending weeks pondering ideas it was initially a post by one of Pols favorite bands "Greenday" who had began their own coffee roasting business that lead us to follow suit. We took a punt and decided to start Black Lab. Watching our beloved Molly with her relentless energy and ability to keep going and going we couldn't think of a better and more suited name to call our next venture.

The Next Step...

Once Lockdown was over we went all out and bought a small 2kg Bideli roaster complete with EP unit and began converting our garage into a small roastery.

Pol spent the next few months doing online zoom courses, research and roasting up a storm until he as confident and we were happy to start our tasting research.

October 2020

Tāhuna

Research came in the form of all of our friends and family members giving us lots of honest feedback.

Many kgs roasted, hours of practice and perfecting later we created our first blend that really showed our potential and would eventually become a Black Lab staple.

We decided to name it after the place that has given us so much opportunity and where we call home, Tāhuna. (the Māori word for Queenstown)

2020 - 2023

Over the next few years we slowly grew our small business supplying a few local cafes, restaurants and starting our waste-free subscription service which runs every Monday and includes free local delivery and a 10% saving.

Sustainability always had to be at the main core of Black lab and we now supply over 100 homes and offices with our swap in/swap out containers meaning zero waste. We have eliminated all plastic bags and have never and will never use any single use cups.

September 2023

Our new Roastery Country Lane

In early 2023 we'd already outgrown our garage and so began looking for a new home for Black Lab. After a chance meeting with the team at Country Lane we signed the deal on an old cabin that was being moved into the small boutique village and spent the next few months transforming her into our beautiful new roastery.

We are now open Wednesday to Sunday 9-3pm for all your home coffee brewing needs.

We serve coffee as well just remember to bring a keep cup if you don't have time to sit in and watch Pol roast.
