Black Lab Coffee Roasters was created in 2020 isolation as we spent each day gazing at our very own black Labrador, Molly; taking her for walks and wondering, amidst so much uncertainty, what the future had in store. We decided what better time than in a global pandemic to follow our dream and start our very own coffee roastery and so with Molly's incredible ability to run and run (and run!) she's inspired us to keep going, take a chance and in turn we couldn't have come up with a better way to honor our best-friend than to name this venture after her.

We went all-out and purchased a 2kg roaster, converted our small garage into a full working roastery and got down to business. After many months of online tutorials, trial and error and lots of help from honest guinea pigs we came up with our first offerings and began selling online. We named our first blend Tāhuna which is the Māori word for Queenstown, a nod to the community that supports us. 12 months in we realized we were getting quite good as well as having gained good traction with our online sales and our ever growing and popular waste free subscription service so we upped our game and started to branch out into local cafes and boutique stores.

Our small business and side hustle had grown into a full time job for Pol who would usually spend his evenings performing at weddings and events as a musician.

We we're now supplying a few local cafes and really pushing our ever growing free subscription service to homes and offices all around the Wakatipu basin.

With a huge focus on waste reduction we found new ways to offer our products without the impact on the environment and costs.

Locals really took to our re-usable container service and we made a pledge to always use the most sustainable packaging. By the end of 2022 we were starting to outgrow our garage and so we began to look for a new home to grow our business.

In early 2023 after a chance meeting with the team at Country Lane we signed a deal to take a small cabin that needed renovating and convert her into our new home and roastery. This cute and unique shopping village had a big focus on local, sustainable and boutique offerings and experiences and so felt like the perfect place for us to grow.

The next few months were spent planning, designing and then moving the cabin into place at then end of the lane. We then gave her a complete new fit out and lease of life.

Our beautifully refurbished new home now sits proudly in place open every day.

With two working roasters on site and enough space for all of our production needs our roastery offers a unique look into what we do, a wide range of coffee to try in different ways.
