From Humble Beginnings

Black Lab Coffee Roasters was created in 2020 isolation as we spent each day gazing at our very own black Labrador, Molly; taking her for walks and wondering, amidst so much uncertainty, what the future had in store. With her incredible ability to run and run (and run!) she's inspired us to keep going, take a chance and in turn we couldn't have come up with a better way to honor our best-friend than to name this venture after her.

Early Days

We began by going all-out and purchasing a 2kg roaster, converting our small garage into a full working roastery and getting down to work. After many months of online learning, zoom tutorials and help from lots of honest guinea pigs we had produced our delicious first blend and began selling online. We named our first blend Tāhuna which is the Māori word for Queenstown, a nod to the community that supports us. After our first year we realized we were getting quite good at this roasting game as well as gaining good traction with our Waste free subscription service.

Growth

Over the next year we managed to grow our small business by supplying a few local cafes as well as pushing our ever growing free subscription service to homes and offices all around the Whakatipu basin. With a huge focus on waste reduction we found new ways to offer our products without the impact on the environment and costs. Locals really took to our re-usable container service and we made a pledge to always use the most sustainable packaging. By the end of 2022 we were starting to outgrow our garage and so we began to look for a new home to grow our business.

Country Lane

In early 2023 after a chance meeting with the team at Country Lane, a small but growing boutique village in Frankton we signed a deal to take a small cabin that had sat waiting for a new project and develop it into our new roastery. The next few months were spent moving the cabin into place and refurbishing it into our new home. The team did an amazing job and we managed to give cabin#7 a complete new lease of life and bring something new and exciting to the lane.

Cabin #7 Country Lane

Today

Our beautifully refurbished new home is open 5 days a week from Wednesday to Sunday 9-3pm. We have two working roasters on site and enough space for all of our production needs. Our roastery offers a unique look into what we do, a wide range of coffee to try in different ways and more often than not a dog or two to welcome you. We supply all your home and office coffee brewing needs and of course all the freshly roasted coffee your heart desires.
